Jack Has a Job

[image:blog.usa.gov/roller/govgab/resource/images]

Jack has a job.

ALL I CAN SAY
At this point, all I can say is that (1) this job is, in fact, in the non-profit sector; (2) the organization in question is flexible enough to allow me to work while I do some of my long-term bike trips; and (3) it is a position that I was offered by a regular reader of this blog.

That last point is key. Not sure I want to have a repeat of what happened during my firm's Christmas party last year. :)

BOTTOM LINE
The bottom line is that I'm pretty excited about this. What's just soooo awesome is that this is the very first time in my working life that I am choosing a job just because I like what I will be doing. Money, status, “career advancement,” etc...went out the window a while ago. All that matters is that I am doing something that reflects my values and adds to my long-term happiness.

Congratulations, Jack. It is nice to have a job you want and like instead of a job you need. Everyone should be so lucky!

You know, Jack, I just got a new job recently and it is with Head Start. I spend my days with children who live in poverty, and who have seen things that I could never imagine. And yet, I love the fact that they are sweet, loving, and just plain adorable. I get paid ok, nothing compared to Big Law, but I make a difference. I hope you find the same feeling in your new job. Good luck, and keep us posted.

That's great. Congratulations!

What sort of NPO are you working for?

Congrats!

Ahhh, congratulations!!

Once you get going you could write about what the work is like (in a non-profit). I'm really curious!

Hmm, of course the question is how freely one can afford to speak with a boss who reads your blog! ;-)

P.S. nice gesture from the blog reader to offer you a job. More than a nice gesture in fact - it tells something about the person.

Congratulations. Sounds like it's a good fit. Will you still be "lawyering?"

Hi,

Found your blog and I can relate. I incurred a ton of student loan debt to get my MD degree and I hate being a doctor more than I thought it was possible to hate anything. I'm looking at my options for doing different things to generate income, both active and passive. My specialty isn't one that's sought after in the underserved areas that offer loan repayment.

I feel a tremedous burden from the student loan debt, trapping me in a doctor job in order to generate the income to service the. Otherwise I've kept my life relatively simple. I prefer to spend my time and money on experiences rather than things.

I'm planning to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Feb 2010 as a fundraiser. Started a blog on that recently - my first blog.

Congrats to you for taking step to be true to yourself.

@KC,

It definitely is. Thanks.

@Nancy,

It sounds like the job for you. Looks like we are where we need to be right now. Good luck.

@Debbi,

Thanks. Not all about disclosing much more than what's on the post at this point. But I think some of my future posts will reveal more.

@jonsfrontiers,

“The best thing in life is to do the thing we love the most for a living.”

Well put.

@Anonymous,

Thanks!

@Concojones,

Yeah, I was thinking of incorporating some of the stuff I'm doing into the blog, to the extent it is relevant and does not reveal too much. And as far as the boss is concerned, they are wonderful!

Jack said...

@dtb,

Thanks. It certainly is.

@Dreamer,

I will. How are things on your end?

@Anonymous,

Thanks. It is. And yes, there is definitely a lawyerly aspect to this job.

@Kady,

Thanks.

@Summitday,

Sounds like we have very similar stories. How goes the planning for the climb? Did you read the recent news on how K's glaciers are receding? Good luck with your exit planning.

@Marissa,

Ok, that was funny.

Hi Jack sorry for delay in responding to you question. Well, Im still at the job, BUT expect some big changes in the summer - we are going to leave our jobs then, and hopefully exit the law, just trying to get the last bit of money together!

I never want to do litigation again! :) If I have to return to the law it will def be doing something non contentious.

Take care

Congratulations! Yes, it is much, much better to choose the job than let the job choose you :).

@dreamer,

You certainly sound in higher spirits than the last time we interacted. I´m glad the plan is coming along, though it sucks about your car. Take care.

@Linda,

Absolutely.

I lost my new job, got terminated after 3 days because I sang the song "Gordon Brown be my Angel" and it breaks the Civil Service Code so it's incompatible. Then I cried for 2 weeks.

I had to publish the song, to fight the war of 124 years.
How about you give me a new Job?

"Gordon Brown be my Angel"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCEWhEuhRoo

Brahms Lullaby

Gordon Brown! Gordon Brown!
Will you be my angel?
Guardian angel is what I meant
Will you rescue my soul?

Gordon Brown, help me sleep!
Help me sleep like a baby
Will my babies ever come out?
